Canyon de Chelly (pronounced "d' SHAY") is home to more than 4,000 archeological sites including spectacular cliff dwellings and significant rock art. Magnificent black stained red cliffs risking as high as 6,000 feet above the canyon floor make wonderful photographic backdrops. The Navajo Tribal Trust owns the Monument and many sites can be visited only with an authorized Native American guide. Without a guide, you can hike to the White House Ruin and drive the north and south rims. Both rim drives have well placed overlooks with good views of First Ruin, Junction Ruin, White House, Sliding House, Antelope House, Mummy Cave, and Massacre Cave as well as Spider Rock, an 800-foot stone spire rising from the canyon floor. With a guide, you may drive and hike in the Canyon as long as conditions are suitable. Driving requires a high clearance, four wheel drive vehicle capable of fording small streams and working through deep sand, and guides will examine your vehicle to make sure it is suitable. Alternatively, commercial tours can be booked at several motels including my favorite, the Thunderbird Lodge. Food and lodging are available within the monument at the Thunderbird Lodge and the Cottonwood Campground is suitable for tents and recreational vehicles. Motels, restaurants, and other services are available in Chinle, adjoining the monument. The Anasazi Guide is loaded with information that will make your visit even more enjoyable. Chapter 9 lists "must see" attractions and provides complete driving directions. Chapter 15 summarizes the Anasazi occupation and important archeological research as well as tips for making the most of your visit. |
