Aztec Ruins preserves the core
of a community that replaced Chaco
as the center of the Anasazi world. Only one great house has been fully
excavated and mounds cover at least five more. Archeological surveys
show that
the entire area was heavily populated, but modern development obscures
large
parts of the Anasazi community.
Highlights of Aztec
Ruins National
Monument
include a self-guided tour through the excavated West Ruin and a
reconstructed
great kiva. The available tour booklet overlooks the broader Aztec
community and my notes
may be of interest. Visitors also see the outlines of a unique tri-wall
structure that
has been reburied. Ranger talks and tours are conducted during the
summer and
the museum displays a handful of artifacts recovered from the West
Ruin.
The modern town of Aztec
has adequate services for most visitors and more services are available
in Farmington
and Bloomfield
nearby.
The Anasazi
Guide
is loaded with information that will make your visit even more
enjoyable. Chapter 9 lists "must see" attractions and provides complete
driving directions. Chapter 12 summarizes the Anasazi occupation and
important archeological research
as well as tips for making the most of your visit.
